Witt’s musical journey has been a sporadic one, defined by a series of starts and stops since he first picked up the guitar in his 20’s. While he came to music late, he immediately began writing songs, inspired by the songwriting of Jeff Tweedy, Elliott Smith, and REM. He wrote constantly and pushed himself to sing what he wrote, but for years he remained a contented closet songwriter.
Witt took a two-year hiatus away from music to attend grad school but got back to songwriting when he was pulled to the Windy City by his advertising career. In Chicago he briefly worked up the courage to join a band, play a handful of shows, and record two self-released EPs. No EP promotion, no tour, no label. Just the satisfaction of finally realizing the full band sound he had always imagined for his songs.
After that, life sped up and changed; there were new interests, professional responsibilities, and new countries to explore. Witt stepped away from making music for over a decade, barely picking up his guitar. This all changed when he moved back to his native Richmond, VA. A change of scenery and return to his roots inspired a wave of creativity. Witt emerged from his musical hibernation and wrote dozens of songs.
In 2024 he decided it was time to record again, fourteen years since his last recording sessions. Witt set up a makeshift home recording studio in his bedroom and got to work. The digital recording software he was learning took his songs in new and more exciting directions. He brought in the multi-talented Dan-O Deckelman to mix and master. Dano-O’s inspiration, collaboration, and production help proved invaluable throughout.
New tools and collaborations. A move back to his native Richmond, plus a milestone birthday all influenced the creation of Witt’s new EP, Infinity Smile. It’s the sound of Witt joyfully experimenting, thrilled to be making music again against the backdrop of a new life. Infinity Smile is unlike any music Witt’s made, with a bolder and more unpredictable sound than his first two recordings from 2010. It’s an eclectic collection of five indie rock tracks that pair the introspective with the upbeat. Songs blend punchy guitar pop and electronic textures with Americana undertones. Tight, powerful grooves, atmospheric, melodic, pulsing layers, with thoughtful lyrics that don’t hide in the mix.
